Tongue Tie, also known as ‘Ankyloglossia’ or ‘anchored tongue’ – is a common but often overlooked condition. Medical experts don’t routinely ‘snip’ a tongue-tie, but the procedure is often recommended to improve breastfeeding. There’s a wide spectrum of ‘connectedness’ to the floor of the mouth–thick tongue-ties, short ones, as well as frenula tethered in many different positions under the tongue. Severe cases of tongue-tie can be treated by cutting the tissue under the tongue (the frenum). Tongue-tie can improve on its own by the age of two or three years. Complications are rare, but there are always some risks to surgery, including bleeding, infection, or scarring. The procedure is usually quick and simple. Tongue-tie surgery for adults The surgery to correct tongue-tie is called a frenectomy. Tongue-tie will not affect a child’s ability to learn speech and will not cause speech delay, but it may cause issues with articulation, or the way the words are pronounced.
